What Coffee Beans Can You Use to Make Espresso?

Boxes of coffee beans lie in seemingly endless rows. The grinder has too many settings and you’re not sure the difference between French roasting and Italian roasting. How do you know which coffee beans make the best espresso?

It’s best to start with the basics. Cappuccino and latte are varieties of espresso. They differ only in the ratio of espresso to steamed milk. Neither requires its own separate kernel type.

The uneducated consumer can easily become overwhelmed trying to choose from the multitude of beans on the market. But do not despair. Sellers sometimes take advantage of the common misconception that there are a lot of beans available to give the impression of a large and diverse inventory. In reality, only two types of coffee beans are commercially available: Arabica and Robusta.

Arabica grows at high altitudes, at least 2,400 feet above sea level, and has a smooth, slightly acidic taste. It generally grows in eastern Africa and Central and South America. Robusta grows at lower altitudes and has a stronger, slightly bitter taste. It can be found in Southeast Asia, Central Africa and Latin America.

All roasters adopt their own methods and beliefs when it comes to roasting, but the basic process involves exposing green, raw coffee beans to temperatures of 250 degrees Celsius or higher, usually for seven to 12 minutes. Heat disrupts the bean’s natural acidity and bitterness. The longer the roasting time, the more bitter and less acidic the beans become.

There is no single correct way to roast or grind beans for espresso. In fact, espresso is usually made from a mixture of beans of different colors and consistencies. It is not uncommon for different geographic regions to prefer a particular blend. For example, in northern Italy, people prefer medium-range espresso roasts, while California tastes tend towards darker, French roasts.

The chances of buying fresh coffee beans in a supermarket are slim to none and this is a pure truth when we are talking about ground coffee too. Your best bet is to pay close attention to the expiration date on the package. The best way to guarantee freshness when purchasing coffee beans is to buy the most popular, fastest-selling beans. The faster the coffee beans sell, the faster they will need to be roasted, increasing your chances of getting the freshest roasted beans. Ideal freshness is achieved by grinding your own freshly roasted beans just before brewing.

It is also important to consider the time intervals in the coffee roasting-grinding-brewing time cycle. The condition of the equipment used and the quality of the water are also important factors. There will no doubt be endless debate about what constitutes the best coffee, but ultimately it’s just a matter of taste.
